SIDE HUSTLE STORIES – MARGARET ANNE

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Margaret Anne (yes I get both names) I’m 50 and I live in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire with my partner of 19 years, Gary. I work full time and have done since I graduated at 21. I initially worked for Standard Life in Edinburgh but it definitely did not light me up so after a few years and some soul searching I went back to uni to do teacher training and I’ve been in education for the past 19 years. Although I’m not currently in school and my job now is developing the maths and numeracy curriculum for my local authority, I’m still really passionate about children’s education and them having a positive school experiences.

I’m a real “home bird” and I love being at home with Gary, we’re always having a laugh! I love my holidays and can’t wait to get back to lying round a pool in the heat somewhere luxurious.

2) How did you find out about Julie and Happy Side Hustle?

I saw an advert on Instagram, thought it sounded perfect for me so I signed up. I actually had to join Facebook to do it, I had never had a Facebook account before then.

3) Why did you decide to join the challenge?

I thought it would give me a bit more focus and help me to make a final decision on what I wanted my side hustle to be.

4) How did the tasks make you feel, how was the challenge day-to-day and overall?

I loved every minute! The tasks were really manageable and made complete sense. It kept me focussed and by the end of the challenge I felt confident in my choice of side hustle, what my next steps were and my longer term action plan. I spent 5 days with an amazing group of women and I got so involved I won the competition for the most interaction!

5) Would you recommend it to others and if so, which type of person do you think would benefit/enjoy it?

O my goodness in a heartbeat. Anyone who has a hobby and they just want to see if it has legs as a micro business- this course is absolutely ideal for It just joins up all the elements and makes you realise you can do it.

6) What is your final side hustle idea?

After the challenge my side hustle idea was wedding stationery and I called it Scarlet Daisy Designs.

I also set up a second side hustle earlier this year making cards and crafts, mainly papercrafts.
I called this Emmay Cards and Crafts after my initials M A.

7) What is your next immediate challenge for the next month or so and can we check back in with you to see how you are getting on?

For Scarlet Daisy Designs it’s to design a few new invites and list them on Etsy and advertise. I also want to approach a few local wedding venues to enquire about becoming a preferred supplier (this terrifies me but I’m putting it in writing here to be accountable!)

For Emmay Cards and Crafts it’s to make more items for Etsy and to try a few products I’ve been planning.

8) Did you join Start Your Happy Side Hustle/The Hive and if so how is that helping and how will it help in the future?

I joined The Hive after doing Julie’s ‘Explode Your Side Hustle Sales’ Bootcamp. I had such a good time and it reminded me that it helps to have this kind of support, accountability and the materials, training and advice Julie provides is amazing. It’s good to know I’m investing in me.

9) Have you tried to set up a side hustle before? If so, how did you get on?

Not really. Although in my twenties I used to press wedding bouquets and frame them for friends and I made bridal bags and embellished bride’s shoes to match their dress but it was the 1990’s so there weren’t the same opportunities to set up a side hustle and it kind of fizzled out.

10)  Share your 3 favourite things about being in The Hive and 3 favourite things about your side hustle.

I love The Hive because of:

    • the amazing support from an incredible group of women,
    • the training and materials Julie provides and that it keeps me focussed and accountable.
    • And the laughs, definitely the laughs.

My three favourite things about my side hustle are:

  1. that it’s something just for me,
  2. that it lights me up and spending time creating things really does bring me joy
  3. and finally that I love creating something that I know will help people remember a happy, special occasion whether that’s a wedding invitation or a handmade gift bag.
