Getting Started With AI

AI for small business owners who don't consider themselves techy

By Julie Begbie

If you've ever thought "AI sounds useful, but it's not really for people like me", this is for you.

Here's the secret nobody tells you: using AI well is a communication skill, not a technical one. If you can explain your business to a new team member, you can brief AI. That's genuinely the whole job.

Start with one annoying job

Don't try to "learn AI". That's like trying to "learn the internet". Instead, pick one job you do every week that you don't enjoy. Writing social posts. Drafting replies to enquiries. Turning your notes into something tidy.

Open a free AI tool like ChatGPT or Gemini and describe that job the way you'd describe it to a person:

"I'm a dog groomer in Fife. Every week I write a Facebook post reminding people to book before Christmas. Write me a friendly draft. I sound warm and a bit cheeky, never corporate."

Will the first answer be perfect? Probably not. Tell it what's wrong, just like you would with a person. "Too formal. Shorter sentences. And I never say 'festive season'." Two rounds of feedback usually gets you something genuinely usable.

Ten minutes counts

You don't need a course, a retreat or a free weekend. Ten minutes a day, most days, beats a heroic four-hour session you never recover from. Small, unglamorous practice is how every confident AI user you admire actually got there.

What AI is good at (and what it isn't)

AI is brilliant at first drafts, repurposing one idea into several posts, summarising rambling notes and untangling a messy to-do list into priorities.

It's not good at knowing your customers, your judgement or your opinions. That's your job, and it's the bit that makes people choose you. AI gets the idea out of your head and onto the page faster. You stay the thinker.

You are not behind

You are not too old, too creative or too non-techy for this. The business owners getting the most from AI aren't the technical ones. They're the ones who know their business well enough to explain it clearly. That's you.
