How to attract more customers without spending a fortune on marketing
By Julie Begbie
Most small business marketing advice assumes you have a budget, a team and a spare twenty hours a week. You have none of those things. Here's what actually works when you're doing it all yourself.
Get clearer before you get louder
The cheapest marketing improvement you can make costs nothing: being able to say, in one sentence, who you help and what changes for them. "I help busy mums in Edinburgh get fit without a gym" will outsell "health and wellness solutions" every single time.
Try it now. If your sentence has the word "passion" in it, keep editing.
Make friends with the customers you already have
Your existing customers are your most affordable marketing channel. Ask them:
- What made you choose me?
- What would you tell a friend about working with me?
- What nearly stopped you?
Their answers are your marketing copy, written in the words your next customers actually use. A happy customer who refers you is worth more than any advert.
Show up where your people already are
You do not need to be on every platform. Pick one place your ideal customers already spend time, and show up there consistently. One useful post a week, every week, beats a burst of ten followed by two months of silence.
Borrow other people's audiences
Local partnerships, guest spots on podcasts, a talk at a networking group, a stall at a community event. Other people have already gathered your customers in one place. Offer something genuinely useful and you'll be remembered.
Let AI carry the heavy bits
This is where AI earns its keep. Take one thing you've already said well, a paragraph from an email, a point you make on every call, and ask AI to turn it into a post, a caption and a short email. Then edit each one so it sounds like you. Visibility becomes a small regular habit instead of a big scary project.
The bit nobody wants to hear
Consistency beats brilliance. A simple message, repeated warmly, in one place, for six months, will do more for your business than a clever campaign you abandon after a fortnight.
If you'd like a plan that fits your actual life, that's exactly what we do in Business Bestie mentoring, and the Happy Business Glow-Up can build the website and content to match.
