Business Psychology

Why confidence matters just as much as technology when introducing AI at work

By Julie Begbie

When a business tells me "AI didn't work for us", the technology is almost never the real story. The real story is how people felt about it.

Fear is a feature, not a bug

If your team is quiet when AI comes up, that's not resistance to progress. It's usually one of three very reasonable fears: "Will this replace me?", "Will I look stupid?", or "Will I break something?"

You can't train someone out of a fear by handing them a login. You have to actually address it.

What the psychology tells us

People adopt new tools when three things are true:

  1. They feel safe to be a beginner. If the first attempt will be judged, nobody attempts.
  2. They can see what's in it for them. Not the business case. The "what gets easier in my Tuesday" case.
  3. They get small wins early. Confidence is built from evidence, not enthusiasm.

Notice what's missing from that list: technical skill.

Start with the people, not the platform

Before you introduce any AI tool, try this:

  • Ask everyone what they'd love to never do again. Those repetitive, draining jobs are your starting list.
  • Pick one job and one volunteer. Let them experiment, badly, in private.
  • Share the small win with the team, including the funny failed attempts.

Curiosity is contagious. So is panic. You get to choose which one you spread.

For the person who's frightened

If you're the one feeling behind, hear this: you are not behind. The people confidently using AI today were confidently wrong with it six months ago. The only difference is they kept going past the awkward bit.

Ten minutes a day, on one real job, with permission to be rubbish at first. That is genuinely the method.

The goal was never the technology

AI that saves time but makes everyone miserable has missed the point. The goal is a business where people feel capable, supported and a bit more optimistic about the future. The tools are just how we get there.

This is the work I love most: helping businesses and their teams feel confident with AI, not just equipped with it. If your organisation could use that kind of help, get in touch.
